Fast Growth - The fry shown at top weighed just 0.7gms, at one year older the fish below it from the farms aquaponics system weighed 760 gms. |
Fast Growing,
easily domesticated & fun to feed make the Rainbow Trout
an excellent fish to use in aquaponics. They prefer water temperatures
under 25 C so are best harvested before the onset of hot summer conditions. A great fish for farm dams being easy to catch and displaying a spectacular fighting performance when hooked. Dams should be a minimum of 2..5 metres deep at the end of summer and preferably have clear water. |
|
Lower temperature tolerances and slower growth
rates make the Brown Trout less suited to aquaponics than the
Rainbow. Usually a harder fish to catch the Brown does have the advantage of living longer therefore often growing to a larger size. A good fish for farm dams for the angler seeking more of a challenge. |

![]() Ferguson Springs Silver Perch brood fish of 1.5kg |
Although
slower growers than the Trout, Silver Perch have a wide range
of temperature tolerance making them a suitable fish for aquaponic
systems year round. Performs well in both muddy and clear dams and being omnivores feed on both weed and aquatic life. This additional food supply enables for much higher stocking densities than with carnivorous fish. |
